What is Scroll DAO?

Overview of the Scroll DAO

The Scroll DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization that will manage the Scroll protocol as it progressively decentralizes over time. DAO members will be able to enact key protocol decisions across several areas of interest, through the voting power of the $SCR token.

The Scroll DAO is part of a larger governance structure that also comprise Scroll Foundation and a Security Council.

How Do I Get Started?

There are several ways for you to get involved in the Scroll DAO, by participating in the initial Co-Creation Cycle and delegating voting rights attached to your $SCR tokens. Note: you have to delegate to yourself if you choose to participate in governance.

$SCR

The first and easiest way you can participate in the Scroll DAO is through holding Scroll’s native token $SCR.

As a $SCR holder, you will be able to vote on:

  • DAO treasury allocations
  • Creation of funding programs, such as grant programs
  • Social ratifications, such as revisions to governing docs

As an $SCR holder, you can choose to personally participate in the voting process. Beyond that, the Scroll DAO will bring delegates on board to lighten the burden on $SCR holders who may have less time or specific expertise to participate in the governance process personally. As in other democratic systems, $SCR holder can give delegates authority to represent them in the governance process and these delegates will vote on behalf of the $SCR holder’s interest.

For more information, please read more about being a Delegate.

Getting Involved

If you are a $SCR holder, you can start by delegating your tokens. Those who are deeply interested in governance can also consider becoming a delegate. Additionally, everyone in the community is welcome to partake in the Co-Creation Cycle and to jump into the relevant discussions on the forum.

The first votes that will go to the DAO will result from the Co-Creation Cycle. The proposals resulting from that cycle will go emerge from the co-creation process and will likely go live in December 2024. The priorities for the Co-Creation Cycle are as follows:

  • Ecosystem Growth (Growth)
  • Global Communities (Community)
  • Governance Iterations (GovIt)

Additionally, there is a more open-ended priority area focusing on Explorations, which will look into what else should be considered as priorities. If you want to learn more about the activities taking place in the co-creation period, check out the Co-Creation Cycle page.

Future Directions

As the protocol eventually decentralizes, the DAO will continue to build on this initial foundation and increase in complexity over time. Some key areas of activity will include:

  • Forming and electing Committees with focus areas (i.e. ecosystem growth, community, governance iteration, treasury management, data and impact, etc.),
  • Funding parallel paths of blockchain research,
  • Seeding open problems in governance to research, including topics such as delegate compensation models and conflict of interest, amongst others,
  • Experimenting with onchain governance models,
  • Collective decision-making using data-driven methodologies,
  • Building out a program of programs of multiple grant programs with various mechanisms to maximize efficacy,
  • Exploring the nature of output, outcome, and impact measurement for the Scroll ecosystem, and
  • Building decentralized and autonomous global communities.
